Ant Control South Africa helps you find pest-control providers who identify the ant species, trace the trail to the nest and treat the colony, rather than just the ants you can see. It suits kitchens, bathrooms, gardens, paving and food businesses.
- Note where the trails start and end, and what the ants are feeding on.
- Say whether the ants are tiny and pale, black, or large with a big head.
- Mention nests in paving, walls, plug points or pot plants.
Tell providers where the ant trails are and compare quotes.
Compare Treatment QuotesSigns of an Ant Problem
- Steady trails along skirting, worktops or window frames.
- Ants in sugar, pet food or the dustbin.
- Small heaps of sand between paving or along walls.
- Ants inside plug points, light switches or appliances.
- Winged ants appearing indoors, usually after rain.
Identifying the Ant and Its Nest
| Ant type | Where it nests | What it wants |
|---|---|---|
| Small household ants (sugar ants) | Wall voids, under paving, around foundations | Sweet food, crumbs, moisture |
| Argentine ants | Large connected nests in gardens and walls | Sugary food and honeydew from plant pests |
| Big-headed ants | Soil, paving joints, lawns | Protein and grease, pet food |
| Pharaoh ants | Warm voids indoors, behind tiles and appliances | Mixed food, common in hospitals and flats |
Identification matters because some species split into new nests when sprayed. A colony-focused treatment targets the queens, not only the workers on the trail.
How Ants Get In
- Gaps around pipes, cables and window frames.
- Cracks in plaster, tiling and expansion joints.
- Paving and garden beds right against the walls.
- Branches and plants touching the house.
What an Ant Inspection Involves
- Follow the trails. The technician tracks ants from the food source back to the nest or entry point.
- Identify the species. This decides between bait, a residual barrier or both.
- Check inside and outside. Paving, foundations, plug points, kitchens and bathrooms.
- Quote the method. You get the products, areas treated and any follow-up in writing.
Professional Ant Treatment Options
Ant baits
Workers carry slow-acting bait back to the nest, reaching the queens and brood. Baits suit indoor problems and species that scatter when sprayed.
Perimeter and nest treatments
A residual insecticide applied around the foundations, paving joints and entry points, or directly into nests outside.
Combined programmes
Persistent garden species often need bait inside and a perimeter treatment outside, with a follow-up visit.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African pest-control and quote websites, checked 20 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no provider is bound by them. Single-figure rows are starting prices from one published price list. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. Most sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

Preparing for an Ant Treatment
- Do not spray or wipe out the trails before the visit; the technician uses them to find the nest.
- After baiting, leave the ants to feed, even if there are more for a few days.
- Put sweet food and pet food in sealed containers.
- Follow the provider's instructions on re-entry, pets and watering treated areas.
Stopping Ants Coming Back
- Seal gaps around pipes and window frames.
- Clean up crumbs and sugary spills straight away.
- Keep plants and mulch away from the walls.
- Treat aphids and scale on garden plants, which feed some ant species.
Ant Control for Homes and Businesses
Homes usually need one treatment and a check. Hospitals, care facilities and food businesses with pharaoh ants need careful baiting programmes: see commercial pest control.

Ant Control FAQs
Why do ants come back after I spray them?
Spray kills the workers you see, not the queens in the nest. Some species also split into new colonies when disturbed. Baiting and nest treatment deal with the colony.
How long does ant bait take to work?
Usually several days to two weeks, depending on the species and colony size. Activity can increase at first as ants feed on the bait.
Why are ants nesting in my plug points?
Some species are drawn to the warmth of electrical fittings. Tell the provider, as these spots need careful treatment. Contact an electrician if fittings are damaged.
Can ants damage paving?
Nesting ants move sand from between pavers, which can cause them to sink or loosen over time.
