Rodent Proofing South Africa is about keeping rats and mice out of a building by finding and sealing the ways they get in. It is different from baiting and trapping rodents already inside, so it is often booked together with rodent control.
- Note where you hear or see rodents: roof, kitchen, garage or walls.
- Photograph gaps under doors, around pipes and at the roof edge.
- Say whether rodents are still active, so control can be done first.
Tell providers where rodents get in and compare proofing quotes.
Compare Rodent Proofing QuotesCommon Rodent Entry Points
| Entry point | What to look for | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Roof eaves and fascia gaps | Gaps where the roof meets the wall | Mesh, closer strips or sealing |
| Pipe and cable penetrations | Gaps around plumbing, gas and electrical entries | Sealant with mesh or steel wool |
| Doors and garage doors | Light visible under or beside the door | Door sweeps and brush strips |
| Air vents and air bricks | Missing or broken covers | Rodent-proof mesh covers |
| Drains and floor traps | Damaged covers or open pipes | Fitted covers and repairs |
A mouse can fit through a gap about the width of a pencil, and rats through slightly larger openings, so small gaps matter.
Rodent Proofing Inspection
- Walk the outside. Roof edges, walls, doors, vents and pipe entries are checked.
- Check the roof space. Droppings, runways and nests show where rodents enter and travel.
- List the openings. Each gap is recorded with the proposed seal or cover.
- Quote the work. A written quote with materials and which openings are included.
Proofing Methods
Sealing and mesh
Gaps are filled with rodent-resistant materials such as steel mesh and sealant, rather than foam alone, which rodents can chew.
Door sweeps and strips
Brush or rubber strips close the gaps under doors and garage doors.
Vent and eave covers
Mesh covers on air bricks, vents and roof eaves stop entry while keeping ventilation.
Seal entry points only once active rodents inside have been dealt with, or they may be trapped in the roof or walls.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African pest-control and quote websites, checked 20 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no provider is bound by them. Proofing is usually priced per job after inspection because the number and type of openings vary. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. Most sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

See pest control prices for related costs.
Before and After Proofing Work

- Store pet food and bird seed in sealed containers.
- Keep shrubs and creepers trimmed back from walls and roofs.
- Report any new droppings or noises so the provider can find a missed gap.
Keeping Rodents Out Long-Term
- Check seals after building work, new cabling or plumbing.
- Keep refuse bins closed and away from doors.
- Remove clutter and stacked materials against walls.
Rodent Proofing for Homes, Restaurants and Warehouses
Homes mostly need roof and pipe sealing. Food businesses and warehouses need dock doors, drains and service entries proofed and checked regularly, often under a service contract. See warehouse pest control.

Rodent Proofing FAQs
Is rodent proofing the same as rodent control?
No. Rodent control removes rats and mice already present. Rodent proofing seals the entry points so new ones cannot get in. Most properties with a recurring problem need both.
Should proofing be done before or after baiting?
Usually after active rodents inside are controlled, so they are not sealed in. The provider sets the order.
Will expanding foam keep rats out?
Not on its own. Rats can chew through foam. Providers combine sealant with steel mesh or other hard materials.
How do I know where rats are getting in?
Look for droppings, grease marks and chewing near gaps at the roof edge, pipes and doors. An inspection traces the routes.
