Leaderr approved Termite Control South Africa - two technicians in black overalls applying a termite treatment along the base of a boundary wall at a white home

Termite Control South Africa connects homeowners, body corporates and businesses with pest-control providers who inspect and treat termites in existing buildings and gardens. Treatment depends on the type of termite, where it is active and how the building was constructed.

  • Photograph mud tubes, damaged wood or bare patches in the lawn.
  • Note whether activity is inside the building, in the garden or both.
  • Say whether the building had soil treatment when it was built, if you know.

Tell providers where you see termite activity and compare quotes.

Signs of Termite Activity

  • Mud tubes running up walls, foundations, door frames or skirting.
  • Hollow-sounding or crumbling timber in frames, floors and built-in cupboards.
  • Soil packed into cracks, plug holes or skirting joints.
  • Swarms of winged termites after rain, or discarded wings near windows.
  • Bare, cut patches in lawns with small soil mounds around holes (harvester termites).

Termite Types Found in South Africa

TypeWhat they attackTypical signs
Subterranean termitesStructural timber, door frames, skirting, stored paper and boxesMud tubes, soil in cracks, hollow timber
Harvester termitesLawns and grass, rarely buildingsCut grass, bare patches, small soil heaps around entry holes
Drywood termitesDry timber and furniture, mainly in some coastal areasSmall dry pellets below infested wood, no mud tubes

Moist soil against walls, leaking pipes, timber touching the ground and cracks in slabs give termites a way in.

What a Termite Inspection Covers

  1. Check the outside. Foundations, boundary walls, paving joints and garden for tubes and nests.
  2. Check the inside. Frames, skirting, floors, cupboards and roof timbers where accessible.
  3. Identify the termite. Subterranean, harvester and drywood termites need different treatments.
  4. Quote the plan. A written quote with the method, treated area and any follow-up or monitoring.

Termite Treatment for Existing Buildings

Soil barrier treatment

A registered termiticide applied into the soil around and under the building, often by drilling through paving or slabs, to create a treated zone termites cannot cross.

Baiting and monitoring stations

Stations placed around the property are checked and baited, so foraging termites carry the bait back to the colony. Slower than a barrier, with less drilling.

Spot and localised treatment

Treatment of a single affected area, nest or lawn patch. Suits light activity or harvester termites in lawns.

Treating an existing building is different from protecting a new one. If you are building, see pre-construction termite treatment, done before the slab is cast. Small holes and fine powder in timber with no mud tubes usually point to beetles rather than termites, so see wood borer treatment.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African pest-control and quote websites, checked 20 October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no provider is bound by them. Bait systems usually carry ongoing monitoring fees. Drilling through paving and reinstatement may be extra. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only. Most sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote.

What Affects the Cost of Termite Treatment

  • Termite type and how widespread the activity is.
  • Building footprint and length of the perimeter treated.
  • Amount of drilling through paving, tiles or slabs.
  • Barrier treatment versus baiting with ongoing monitoring.
  • Repairs to damaged timber, which are usually quoted separately.

Compare costs with other pests on the pest control prices guide.

Preparing for Termite Treatment and Aftercare

  • Clear access to walls, skirting and cupboards where the technician needs to drill or inspect.
  • Move stored boxes and timber off the floor in garages and outbuildings.
  • Avoid digging or watering heavily in treated soil unless the provider says it is fine.
  • Follow the provider's instructions on children, pets, fish ponds and vegetable beds near treated areas.

Keeping Termites Out After Treatment

  • Fix leaking taps, gutters and downpipes that wet the soil against walls.
  • Keep firewood, compost and timber off the ground and away from the house.
  • Leave a gap between soil or mulch and the damp-proof course.
  • Book periodic inspections, especially where bait stations are installed.

Termite Control for Homes, Complexes and Commercial Sites

Homeowners usually need a once-off barrier or localised treatment. Complexes, schools, warehouses and farms with outbuildings often use baiting with scheduled inspections under pest control contracts.

Termite Control FAQs

How do I know if it is termites or wood borer?

Termites usually leave mud tubes and soil in damaged timber. Wood borers leave small round exit holes and fine powder, with no soil. An inspection confirms which one it is.

Do harvester termites damage houses?

Rarely. Harvester termites feed on grass, so the damage is mainly bare patches in lawns. Subterranean termites are the ones that attack building timber.

Is a barrier treatment or baiting better?

A barrier works quickly and protects the building directly. Baiting needs less drilling but takes longer and needs regular checks. Ask each provider why they recommend one over the other for your property.

Will termite treatment repair the damage?

No. Treatment deals with the termites. Damaged frames, floors or roof timbers are repaired separately, usually by a builder or carpenter.

Do I need termite treatment if my house had soil poisoning when it was built?

Pre-construction treatment reduces the risk but can wear off over time or be broken by later building work. If you see activity, have it inspected.
